Summary:
Transport reactions in this class are catalysed by proteins which use the energy of the membrane electrochemical gradient to drive uptake or export of substrates. These membrane proteins can catalyze uniport (a single species is transported), antiport (two species are transported in opposite directions) or symport (two species are transported together in the same direction). Symporters and antiporters are secondary active transporters which use chemiosmotic energy in the form of a proton, sodium or other solute gradient to drive transport of one substrate against it's concentration gradient. Membrane uniporters in this class catalyse the transport of a substrate down its concentration gradient in a membrane potential dependent process.
