Summary:
The art gene cluster contains two transcription units: artPIQM and artJ [Wissenbach95] which are regulated by the the arginine repressor, ArgR [Caldara06, Caldara07]. Sequence analysis indicates that ArtQ, ArtP and ArtM are the membrane components of an ATP dependent transporter, and ArtJ has been experimentally characterised as an L-arginine binding periplasmic protein. ArtI exhibits homology with a number of ABC transporter periplasmic binding proteins, but its substrate is not known. Purified ArtI does not bind any of the common or uncommon amino acids nor putrescine [Linton98, Wissenbach95]. It is assumed that ArtJ and ArtI are periplasmic binding proteins that share the ArtQPM membrane proteins [Wissenbach95].

ArtJ is a periplasmic binding protein with high affinity for L-arginine [Wissenbach95].
