Escherichia coli K-12 substr. MG1655 Polypeptide: osmotically inducible peroxidase OsmC

Gene: osmC Accession Numbers: EG10680 (EcoCyc), b1482, ECK1476

Synonyms: osmotically inducible protein

Regulation Summary Diagram: ?

Summary:
OsmC is a non-essential protein [Gutierrez91] which has been shown to have peroxidase activity with a strong preference for organic hydroperoxide [Lesniak03]. The OsmC ortholog of Thermus thermophilus has also been shown to have hydroperoxide peroxidase activity [Rehse04].

Expression of osmC is growth phase-regulated and osmotically inducible [Gutierrez91, Bouvier98]. osmC mutants show increased sensitivity to oxidative stress [Conter01].

The crystal structure of OsmC shows a domain-swapped dimer [Lesniak03]; structural comparisons suggest that the protein functions as a peroxiredoxin [Shin04].

Transcriptional regulation has been described [Gordia96, DavalosGarcia01, Toesca01, Sturny03]. Mutations in H-NS lead to constitutive expression of osmC [Gutierrez91], and regulation of osmC expression by H-NS may be indirect [Bouvier98].
