Summary:
RsfS is a ribosomal silencing factor that inhibits assembly of the functional 70S ribosome. It interacts directly with the 50S ribosomal subunit protein L14 [Hauser12].

RsfS was found to associate with the 50S subunit of the ribosome [Jiang06]. RsfS is similar to the Lojap protein of Zea mays, which is involved in the stability of chloroplast ribosomes [Walbot79].

A transposon insertion in rsfS has a synthetic lethal phenotype with minCDE; this is likely due to its effect on the expression of one of the downstream genes, mrdA or mrdB [Bernhardt04].

In a competitive growth experiment, an rsfS mutant has only a modest growth disadvantage under exponential growth conditions in rich medium. However, rsfS mutants adapt slowly to poor growth conditions, and viability in stationary phase is decreased [Hauser12]. An rsfS deletion mutant is more sensitive to ampicillin and kasugamycin than wild type [Skunca13].
