Summary:
Mutation of osmY resulted in increases sensitivity to hyperosmotic stress [Yim92]. Expression of osmY is induced under conditions of hyperosmotic stress [Barron86]. This 8- to 10-fold induction occurs transiently [Yim92]. osmY is also induced upon entry into stationary phase [Weichart93]. osmY is positively regulated by σS and negatively regulated by Lrp, cAMP-CRP, and IHF; however, none of these regulators are absolutely required for osmotic regulation. [Lange93]. σ70 and σS are both involved in transcription of osmY under normal conditions, but when potassium glutamate concentrations increase, σS increases transcription while transcription by σ70 is inhibited [Ding95].
