Summary:
YbdG is a low abundance mechanosensitive channel of miniconductance [Schumann10, Berrier96]. Expression of ybdG at wild-type levels confers protection against mild hypoosmotic shock while over-expression of ybdG is able to protect against severe rapid shock [Schumann10]. Miniconductance of the YbdG channel cannot be detected in standard patch clamp experiments; however a YbdG V229A mutant exhibits a high frequency of miniconductance channel activity [Schumann10]. ybdG expression is stimulated by growth at high osmolarity [Schumann10].

YbdG has a large membrane domain organised into 5 transmembrane (TM) regions. The 5th TM helix is homologous to the MscS pore-lining helix [Schumann10, Pivetti03]. Blue native PAGE and cross-linking experiments suggest a stoichiometry of 7 YbdG subunits per channel [Schumann10].

Seven mechanosensitive ion channels have been characterised in E. coli K-12: MscL, MscS, MscK, MscM, YnaI, YbiO and YbdG. A strain lacking all seven of these proteins fails to demonstrate channel opening in patch clamp experiments [Edwards12].
