Summary:
ZapC is a cell division protein that binds FtsZ, promotes lateral interactions/bundling between FtsZ protofilaments [DurandHeredia11, Hale11] and suppresses the GTPase activity of FtsZ [Hale11].

Localization of ZapC to the Z ring is dependent on FtsZ and independent of FtsA, ZipA, ZapA or ZapB [DurandHeredia11, Hale11].

Cell division in a zapC mutant is almost normal [DurandHeredia11, Hale11]. Reports disagree on whether [Hale11] or not [DurandHeredia11] zapC mutants in combination with ΔminCDE or zapA mutants show synthetic cell division phenotypes. Overexpression of zapC also results in varying phenotypes: [DurandHeredia11] report that overexpression of a ZapC-GFP fusion protein results in aberrant organization of the FtsZ ring, but no growth defect, while [Hale11] report that ZapC overexpression is lethal due to defective FtsZ assembly.
