Summary:
Sequence analysis indicates that the b2337 gene (yfcT) and the b2338 gene (yfcU) are two parts of a putative fimbrial usher protein interrupted by a stop codon. The yfcTU genes are found in a predicted operon with other putative fimbrial genes and have sequence similarity with fimbrial usher proteins [Korea10]. yfcOPQRSTUV is cryptic under normal laboratory conditions but when constitutive expression is induced in a strain that lacks the type 1 fimbrial complex the yfc operon promotes adhesion to eukaryotic epithelial cells (T4 bladder cells) [Korea10]. Expression of the yfc operon is regulated by the global regulators H-NS and CRP cAMP [Korea10].

This operon has a high degree of similarity in both sequence and organization to an operon found in Salmonella typhimurium, discovered by genomic subtractive hybridization as absent in Salmonella typhi [Morrow99].

A yfcU mutation has been isolated from an E. coli B strain evolved under conditions of minimal medium with a glucose carbon source [Schneider00b].
