alaE encodes an inducible L-alanine exporter in E.coli K-12. Disruption of alaE in an L-alanine non-metabolising strain results in the significant accumulation of intra-cellular alanine and this phenotype can be relieved by the over-expression of alaE from a plasmid [Hori11]. The expression of alaE is induced by the dipeptide, L-alanyl-L-alanine [Hori11]. YgaW exhibits stereopecificity for L-alanine [Hori11]. The physiological role of AlaE is not clear but it may act to prevent the excessive accumulation of alanine in a peptide rich environment such as that found in the mammalian intestine.
