Summary:
MscM (fomerly YjeP) is a mechanosensitive ion channel of miniconductance in E. coli K-12. MscM gates spontaneously in response to increased membrane tension and overexpression of mscM in a cell line lacking all known mechanosensitive channels protects cells against hypoosmotic shock [Edwards12].

MscM is a member of the small mechanosensitive ion channel (MscS) family [Levina99]. mscM deletion mutants exhibit no detectable phenotype [Levina99]. Expression of mscM increased after kasugamycin challenge of a relA strain [Sabina03].

MscM is likely to form homoheptameric channels [Edwards12]. McsM is predicted to have 11 transmembrane spans and an extensive periplasmic domain [Pivetti03, Edwards12].

Seven mechanosensitive ion channels have been characterised in E. coli K-12: MscL, MscS, MscK, MscM, YnaI, YbiO and YbdG. A strain lacking all seven of these proteins fails to demonstrate channel opening in patch clamp experiments [Edwards12].
