Summary:
MdlA and MdlB are uncharacterized members of the ABC superfamily of transporters [Saurin99]. The mdlA and mdlB genes are very similar in sequence and are located adjacent to one another arguing that they may be the result of a recent gene duplication event. These proteins each contain both ATP-binding and membrane components. Based on sequence similarity these proteins may function as an ATP-dependent drug efflux pumps.
Rob is a transcriptional regulator related with the increase in resistance to antibiotics and is expressed constitutively. Bennik et al have shown that this regulator activates the transcription of mdlA gene and that it is forms three complexes in the promoter region, suggesting the existence of multiple Rob binding sites [Bennik00].
