Summary:
YojI is a member of the ABC superfamily of transporters [Saurin99]. It is the putative membrane spanning component of an ABC complex. Sequence analysis suggests that yojI encodes an ABC-type exporter [Paulsen98] with six hydrophobic transmembrane segments and a single nucleotide-binding domain [Nishino01]. The normal physiological function of YojI is unknown.

Mutation and complementation studies indicate that YojI forms an efflux pump that, when expressed from a multicopy vector and with the help of the outer membrane channel TolC, is able to export the peptide antibiotic microcin J25, making the cell resistant [Delgado05].

Expression of yojI is upregulated by guanosine 3',5'-bispyrophosphate (ppGpp) [Pomares08].
