Superclasses: a regulatory RNA
The LdrD peptide and RdlD antisense regulatory RNA are encoded within one of a set of four Long Direct Repeats (LDRs); RdlD acts as the antitoxin of a Type I toxin-antitoxin pair [Kawano02].
Overproduction of LdrD causes toxicity, manifesting as condensation of the nucleoid and cell death. RdlD RNA is complementary to the upstream region of the ldrD gene, and it acts to regulate LdrD translation. The ldrD mRNA is stable, whereas the RdlD antisense RNA is unstable [Kawano02]. [Gerdes07] proposed the hypothesis that translation of LdrD is regulated by RdlD RNA via regulation of translation of the larger ORF ldrX.
