A 5' end was identified by RACE for sroC by Vogel et al. (2003) [Vogel03]. However, it is unlikely that it represents a transcriptional start site, as it does not have a promoter motif upstream [Vogel03]. Its expression is derived from a leader or leader region of mRNA [Vogel03].
SroC is encoded by the intergenic region between ybeJ, the first gene of a proposed alternative glutamate transport operon, and gltJKL. Lacking E. coli promoter motifs upstream, it may be generated by transcription attenuation. The half life of SroC during stationary phase is 32 minutes [Vogel03].
