During exponential phase growth, expression of pqiAB is inducible by paraquat and other superoxide generators such as menadione, phenazine methosulfate, and plumbagin, but not by hydrogen peroxide, ethanol, and heat shock. pqiAB is a member of the soxRS regulon [Koh95]. Carbon or phosphate starvation during stationary phase leads to an RpoS-dependent increase in pqiAB expression [Koh96].

A pqiA mutant has no obvious phenotype, including no change in resistance to oxidants [Koh95].
