Summary:
TorT is a periplasmic protein involved in the regulation of the torCAD operon, whose expression is induced in the presence of TMAO. TMAO was shown to bind to TorT with a binding constant of 150 µM, promoting a conformational change of the protein. TorT interacts with the periplasmic domain of the two-component sensor protein TorS, and binding of TMAO to TorT may indirectly induce a conformational change in TorS [Baraquet06].

A torT null mutation abolishes tor operon expression; overproduction of the response regulator TorR can partially bypass the requirement for TorT [Jourlin96]. TorT is dispensable in a torS constitutive mutant [Jourlin96a].
