Escherichia coli K-12 substr. MG1655 Polypeptide: integral membrane protein of SoxR-reducing complex

Gene: rsxA Accession Numbers: G6871 (EcoCyc), b1627, ECK1623

Synonyms: ydgL

Regulation Summary Diagram: ?

Summary:
The rsxABCDGE gene cluster and the rseC gene together encode a SoxR reducing system that acts to turn off SoxR-mediated induction of the SoxS transcription factor in the absence of oxidizing agents [Koo03]. Deletion of any gene within the rsxABCDGE gene cluster causes constitutive activation of soxS transcription [Koo03].

The proteins encoded by the rsxABCDGE gene cluster are predicted to form a membrane-associated complex [Koo03]. RsxA and RsxE are predicted to span the membrane greater than six times [Koo03]. Sequence analysis indicates that RsxA and RsxE are homologous, oppositely oriented proteins which form an antiparallel heterodimer or higher oligomer within the inner membrane [Rapp06].

The rsxABCDGE gene cluster has similarity to the Rhodobacter capsulatus rnfABCDGE gene cluster, which plays a role in nitrogenase reduction [Koo03].

rsxA insertion mutants were identified in a genetic screen for genes that are important for survival of exposure to ionizing radiation (IR). An rsxA deletion mutant has a moderate decrease in IR survival [Byrne14].

Rsx: "reducer of SoxR" [Koo03]
