In E. coli strains O8 and O9, the orthologous Wzz protein was shown to control the length of the O-antigen component of lipopolysaccharide [Franco96, Amor97]. Regulation of O-antigen chain length is required for virulence of Salmonella typhimurium [Murray03a]. E. coli K12 does not produce O-antigen.

WzzB appears to be present as a dimer in the membrane [Stenberg05].
