Summary:
There are two distinct tagatose-1,6-bisphosphate aldolases in E. coli. The gatYZ-encoded aldolase 2 is part of the galactitol catabolism pathway. The agaYZ-encoded aldolase, tagatose-1,6-bisphosphate aldolase 1, is used in two pathways, in the N-acetylgalactosamine catabolism pathway and in galactitol metabolism as well.
