Summary:
Although E. coli encodes the enzymes constituting this pathway by which ethanol can be degraded to acetyl-CoA and thereby enter central metabolism, in wild type ethanol is not metabolized at a sufficient rate to support growth. Certain mutant strains, however, with altered patterns of gene expression can grow on ethanol as source source of carbon and energy.
