Enzyme Commission Synonyms for 4.1.2.14: phospho-2-keto-3-deoxygluconate aldolase, KDPG aldolase, phospho-2-keto-3-deoxygluconic aldolase, 2-keto-3-deoxy-6-phosphogluconic aldolase, 2-keto-3-deoxy-6-phosphogluconate aldolase, 6-phospho-2-keto-3-deoxygluconate aldolase, ODPG aldolase, 2-oxo-3-deoxy-6-phosphogluconate aldolase, 2-keto-3-deoxygluconate-6-P-aldolase, 2-keto-3-deoxygluconate-6-phosphate aldolase, 2-dehydro-3-deoxy-D-gluconate-6-phosphate D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate-lyase, 2-dehydro-3-deoxy-D-gluconate-6-phosphate D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate-lyase (pyruvate-forming)

Enzyme Commission Primary Name for 4.1.2.55: 2-dehydro-3-deoxy-phosphogluconate/2-dehydro-3-deoxy-6-phosphogalactonate aldolase

Enzyme Commission Synonyms for 4.1.2.55: 2-keto-3-deoxygluconate aldolase (ambiguous), KDGA (ambiguous)

Summary:
This is the second reaction in the Entner-Doudoroff pathway. It is also a key reaction of hexuronic acid metabolism.

Enzyme Commission Summary for 4.1.2.14:
The enzyme shows no activity with 2-dehydro-3-deoxy-D-galactonate 6-phosphate. cf. EC 4.1.2.55, 2-dehydro-3-deoxy-phosphogluconate/2-dehydro-3-deoxy-6-phosphogalactonate aldolase [Barran71]. Also acts on 2-oxobutanoate [Meloche64].

Enzyme Commission Summary for 4.1.2.55:
In the archaeon Sulfolobus solfataricus the enzyme is involved in glucose and galactose catabolism via the branched variant of the Entner-Doudoroff pathway. It utilizes 2-dehydro-3-deoxy-D-gluconate 6-phosphate and 2-dehydro-3-deoxy-D-galactonate 6-phosphate with similar catalytic efficiency. In vitro the enzyme can also catalyse the cleavage of the non-phosphorylated forms 2-dehydro-3-deoxy-D-gluconate and 2-dehydro-3-deoxy-D-galactonate with much lower catalytic efficiency. cf. EC 4.1.2.21, 2-dehydro-3-deoxy-6-phosphogalactonate aldolase and EC 4.1.2.14, 2-dehydro-3-deoxy-phosphogluconate aldolase.
