Subunit composition of phospholipid ABC transporter = [MlaC][MlaF]2[MlaE]2[MlaD][MlaB]2

Summary:
The MlaBCDEF phospholipid transporter is a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) superfamily of transporters [Saurin99, Malinverni09]. Based on sequence similarity MlaC is the periplasmic binding protein, MlaE and MlaD are integral membrane components and MlaF is the ATP binding component. The Mla pathway prevents phospholipid accumulation in the outer leaflet of the outer membrane (OM).

Single deletion mutants in each of the mla genes results in increased OM permeability as measured by sensitivity to SDS-EDTA [Malinverni09]. The defects in membrane permeability of an mlaC mutant could be suppressed by an increase in pldA transcription [Malinverni09]. An mlaC mutant has increased levels of phospholipids in the outer leaflet of the OM [Malinverni09].

The fate of phospholipid is unknown but may be incorporated in to the inner membrane [Malinverni09]
