isrC was first identified in a screen for potential small RNA genes [Chen02]. It is not clear whether IsrC simply represents the attenuated UTR of flu or whether it has an independent function [Wallecha14].
A predicted secondary structure at the 3' end of isrC functions as a rho-independent terminator in vitro. Antitermination is regulated in vivo; initiation of translation at the in-frame ATG codon within isrC enhances expression of flu [Wallecha14].
