Summary:
Parathion is an organic phosphorus compound which is used as an insecticide. Parathion, a cholinesterase inhibitor (see EC 3.1.1.7 and 3.1.1.8 for cholinesterases), is extremely toxic to most animals including humans (in which LD50 is 5 to 10 mg/kg), and may cause death by inducing respiratory failure. Parathion use is banned in many countries due to its toxicity and pollutant properties.
