Summary:
Phytoene synthase (PSY) catalyzes the committed step to carotenoids. The enzyme converts geranylgeranyl diphosphate, produced by the upstream methylerythritol phosphate pathway I and geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate synthase, to 15-cis-phytoene.

A cDNA encoding phytoene synthase (PSY) was isolated from Arabidopsis thaliana [Scolnik94] based on the PSY1 cDNA of tomato. Phytoene synthase catalyzes the dimerization of two molecules of geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate to phytoene. The PSY gene was overexpressed in Arabidopsis seedlings resulting in a significant increase of one the phytoene successor intermediate β-carotene [Lindgren03]. It has been demonstrated in phytochrome mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana that the expression of PSY is under the control of phytochrome [vonLintig97].
