MetaCyc Enzyme: malate thiokinase

Synonyms: MTK, Malate--CoA ligase

Species: Methylobacterium extorquens AM1

Subunit composition of malate thiokinase = [MtkB][MtkA]
         malate thiokinase α subunit = MtkB
         malate thiokinase β subunit = MtkA

Summary:
Malate thiokinase (MTK) has not been purified from M. extorquens. However, the genes encoding it were cloned, and mutants were constructed. The mutants were unable to grow on C1 compounds. Complementation of the mutants with the cloned genes restored MTK activity, verifying the correlation between the genes and MTK activity [Chistoserdova94]. The protein is very similar to succinyl-CoA synthetase from Escherichia coli and Thermus thermophilus.
