Summary:
nicotinamide riboside kinase catalyzes the synthesis of β-nicotinamide D-ribonucleotide from 1-(β-D ribofuranosyl)nicotinamide. The Saccharomyces cerevisiae NRK1 gene, which encodes the enzyme, was identified by large scale screening of purified GST-fused yeast reading frames. The gene was then expressed in Escherichia coli and purified. A null mutant was also created, confirming the proposed role of the enzyme [Bieganowski04].
