Summary:
Potassium ions are essential for plant nutrition and play an important role in osmoregulation [Zeilinger94]. Potassium is used for regulation of cell membrane potential and turgor pressure. For example, higher plants require potassium as an osmoticum in the opening of stomata.

Plants possess different kinds of potassium transporters differing in their energy requirements, their selectivity, and their tissue specific localization

A cDNA clone that was isolated from Arabidopsis thaliana encodes a Shaker-like outward K+ channel. The gene, which was named SKOR, has a cyclic nucteotide binding domain. Expression in Xenopus oocytes showed that it is an outward rectifying K+ channel. An internal pH decrease from 7.4 to 7.2 induced a strong (ca. 80%) voltage-independent decrease of the macroscopic SKOR current. An external acidification from 7.4 to 6.4 had similar effects.

The expression of SKOR is restricted to the root stelar tissues, and is strongly inhibited by the stress phytohormone abscisic acid [Lacombe00].
