A cDNA clone was isolated from the fungus Botrytis cinerea, followed by gene inactivation and complementation by protoplast transformaion. The cDNA was recombinantly expressed in E.coli and functionally characterized. The enzyme was shown to catalyze the conversion of (2E,6E)-farnesyl diphosphate into the presilphiperfolan-8β-ol, the parent sesquiterpene of the botrydial biosynthesis pathway [Pinedo08] .
