MetaCyc Enzyme: ginsenoside β- glucosidase

Species: Panax ginseng

Summary:
An enzyme was isolated from roots of Panax ginseng. The protein was purified using ion exchange chromatography and biochemically characterized. The enzyme catalyzed the conversion of (20S)-ginsenoside Rg3 to (20S)-ginsenoside Rh2, it hydrolyzes the β- (1- 2)-glucoside bond of (20S)-ginsenoside Rg3. It also exhibited considerable functional variation from other beta glucosidases [Zhang01].

Enzymatic reaction of: ginsenoside β- glucosidase

(20S)-ginsenoside Rg3 + H2O <=> (20S)-ginsenoside Rh2 + D-glucopyranose

The reaction direction shown, that is, A + B ↔ C + D versus C + D ↔ A + B, is in accordance with the Enzyme Commission system.
