MetaCyc Enzyme: ubiquitin-activating enzyme

Gene: UBA1 Accession Number: G-14599 (MetaCyc)

Synonyms: ubiquitin-activating enzyme E1 1

Species: Triticum aestivum

Summary:
A cDNA clone isolated from wheat germ was shown to ecode an E1 ubiquitin-activating enzyme and was named UBA1. The enzyme is composed of 1051 amino acids. Heterologous expresseion and characterization of the recombianant protein showed that it catalyzes the formation of a thiol ester linkage between ubiquitin and an ubiquitin carrier protein [Hatfield90].

Molecular Weight of Polypeptide: 117.0 kD (from nucleotide sequence)

Enzymatic reaction of: ubiquitin-activating enzyme

EC Number: 6.2.1.i

an [E1 ubiquitin-activating enzyme]-L-cysteine + a [ubiquitin] C-terminal glycine + ATP <=> an S-ubiquitinyl-[E1 ubiquitin-activating enzyme]-L-cysteine + AMP + diphosphate

The reaction direction shown, that is, A + B ↔ C + D versus C + D ↔ A + B, is in accordance with the direction in which it was curated.

The reaction is physiologically favored in the direction shown.
