A cDNA clone isolated from wheat germ was shown to ecode an E1 ubiquitin-activating enzyme and was named UBA1. The enzyme is composed of 1051 amino acids. Heterologous expresseion and characterization of the recombianant protein showed that it catalyzes the formation of a thiol ester linkage between ubiquitin and an ubiquitin carrier protein [Hatfield90].
