MetaCyc Enzyme: alpha-humulene synthase

Gene: zss1 Accession Number: G-11335 (MetaCyc)

Species: Zingiber zerumbet

Summary:
A cDNA clone was isolated from Shampoo ginger leaves. The cDNA was recombinantly expressed and functionally characterised from E.coli. The cDNA encoded an enzyme with homology to terpene synthases. It was shown to catalyze the conversion of FPP into a major product alpha-humulene and a minor product beta-caryophyllene [Yu08d].

Molecular Weight of Polypeptide: 64.5 kD (from nucleotide sequence), 64.5 kD (experimental) [Yu08d ]

Enzymatic reaction of: (E)-β-caryophyllene synthase (alpha-humulene synthase)

EC Number: 4.2.3.57

(2E,6E)-farnesyl diphosphate <=> (-)-β-caryophyllene + diphosphate

The reaction direction shown, that is, A + B ↔ C + D versus C + D ↔ A + B, is in accordance with the Enzyme Commission system.

The reaction is favored in the direction shown.
