Summary:
A new sesquiterpene synthase was isolated and characterized from Solanum lycopersicum using the shotgun proteomics approach to analyse the secondary metabolites within trichomes of Solanum lycopersicum. The expressed sequence tag, combined with proteomics data and metabolite analysis yeilded a terpene synthase that catalyzed the formation of (-)-β-caryophyllene and α-humulene from (2E,6E)-farnesyl diphosphate [Schilmiller10].
