MetaCyc Enzyme: C18-Δ9 elongase

Species: Isochrysis galbana

Summary:
The microalga Isochrysis galbana is rich in long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids such as (4Z,7Z,10Z,13Z,16Z,19Z)-docosahexaenoate [Qi02]. The ASE1 gene, encoding a polyunsaturated fatty acid-elongating activity, was isolated from this organism [Qi02]. Transgenic Saccharomyces cerevisiae expressing ASE1 specifically elongated the C18-Δ9 PUFAs linoleate and α-linolenate to eicosadienoate and eicosatrienoate, respectively. This suggests that ASE1 encodes the 3-oxoacyl-CoA synthase component of the elongase, and that it is able to interact with the other members of the yeast elongase complex (see very long chain fatty acid biosynthesis II) [Qi02].
