MetaCyc Enzyme: C18 Δ9-polyunsaturated fatty acyl-CoA elongase

Gene: ASE1 Accession Number: G-14792 (MetaCyc)

Synonyms: C18 Δ9-fatty acid elongase, Δ9 elongase

Species: Isochrysis galbana

Summary:
The microalga Isochrysis galbana is rich in long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids such as docosahexaenoate [Qi02]. The ASE1 gene, encoding a polyunsaturated fatty acid-elongating activity, was isolated from this organism [Qi02]. Transgenic Saccharomyces cerevisiae expressing ASE1 specifically elongated the C18-Δ9 PUFAs linoleate and α-linolenate to an eicosadienoate and an eicosatrienoate, respectively. This suggests that ASE1 encodes the 3-oxoacyl-CoA synthase component of the elongase, and that it is able to interact with the other members of the yeast elongase complex (see very long chain fatty acid biosynthesis II) [Qi02].

Enzymatic reaction of: 3-oxo-(11Z,14Z)-icosa-11,14-dienoyl-CoA synthase (C18 Δ9-polyunsaturated fatty acyl-CoA elongase)

malonyl-CoA + linoleoyl-CoA + H+ <=> 3-oxo-(11Z,14Z)-icosa-11,14-dienoyl-CoA + CO2 + coenzyme A

The reaction direction shown, that is, A + B ↔ C + D versus C + D ↔ A + B, is in accordance with the Enzyme Commission system.

The reaction is favored in the direction shown.

In Pathways: arachidonate biosynthesis IV (8-detaturase)

Enzymatic reaction of: 3-oxo-icosatrienoyl-CoA synthase (C18 Δ9-polyunsaturated fatty acyl-CoA elongase)

malonyl-CoA + α-linolenoyl-CoA + H+ <=> 3-oxo-icosatrienoyl-CoA + CO2 + coenzyme A

The reaction direction shown, that is, A + B ↔ C + D versus C + D ↔ A + B, is in accordance with the direction in which it was curated.

The reaction is favored in the direction shown.

In Pathways: icosapentaenoate biosynthesis V (Δ8 desaturase)
