Summary:
Digeranylgeranylglyceryl phosphate synthase is an integral membrane enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of a geranylgeranyl unit from geranylgeranyl diphosphate to to the C2 hydroxyl of 3-(O-geranylgeranyl)-sn-glycerol 1-phosphate, forming 2,3-bis-O-(geranylgeranyl)glycerol 1-phosphate.

Enzymatic activity has been documented in cell-free extract of Methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus, but the protein has not been purified from that organism [Zhang90]. Orthologous enzymes have been cloned from Sulfolobus solfataricus [Hemmi04] and Methanosarcina acetivorans [Yokoi12] and the enzyme from the former was purified.
