MetaCyc Polypeptide: phenolphthiocerol synthesis polyketide synthase type I

Summary:
Phenolphthiocerol is a crucial virulence factor of pathogenic mycobacteria. There is an accumulation of glycosylated p-hydroxybenzoic acid methyl esters and a deficiency in the production of phenolphthiocerol in mycobacterial strains mutant for pks15/1 which codes for phenolphthiocerol synthesis polyketide synthase type I [Constant02]. It catalyzes the elongation of p-hydroxybenzoic acid to form p-hydroxyphenylalkanoate intermediates in the phenolphthiocerol biosynthetic pathway which has yet to be fully elucidated.
