Summary:
The Methanocaldococcus jannaschii MJ1418 gene product was expressed in Escherichia coli and purified. The enzyme was found to catalyze the condensation of a mixture of D- and L-(S)-lactaldehyde with dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP) to form four different deoxyhexose sugars, including L-fuculose 1-phosphate. The specific activity of this condensation was 570 nmol/min/mg protein.

This reaction is reversible, and the authors suggest that it may be a main source for the production of (S)-lactaldehyde, which is subsequently used to form phospholactate, a precursor of oxidized coenzyme γ-F420-2.

The enzyme was able to utilize several alternative substrates, including D-glyceraldehyde. All in all, the enzyme from Methanocaldococcus jannaschii showed similar substrate specificity to the Escherichia coli K-12 FucA[Grochowski06].
