The aromatic amino acid L-phenylalanine is biosynthesized from the principal precursors D-erythrose 4-phosphate and phosphoenolpyruvate via chorismate, a common precursor of many aromatic compounds including L-tyrosine, L-tryptophan, and several other essential compunds, as shown in the superpathway of chorismate metabolism.
