Summary:
carboxyphosphonoenolpyruvate phosphonomutase catalyzes a key step in the biosynthesis of the antibiotic bialaphos - the rearrangement of the carboxyphosphono group of carboxyphosphonoenolpyruvate to form the unusual C-P bond of phosphinopyruvate, followed by decarboxylation.

The enzyme has been isolated from the cell extract of a mutant (NP71) of Streptomyces hygroscopicus and purified purified about 200-fold [Hidaka90].

The bcpA gene that encodes the enzyme was identified by complementation of a second mutant and sequenced [Hidaka92, Pollack92]. The gene was also expressed in Streptomyces lividans [Hidaka90] and in Escherichia coli [Pollack92].
